The emergence of deep learning AI technologies like #midjourney and #stablediffusion makes it look like we have finally come up with the “make art” button. With just a few keywords you’ll be able to create stunning pieces of #art. This sounds too good to be true, but it is true, with the help of millions if not billions of artworks (most of it is used without the consent of the artist) you are now able to generate artwork that looks like Van Gogh’s. #AI generated artwork is an amalgamation of millions of pieces of art that is used without the consent of the artist.

How this works is, AI image generator uses a diffusion model, it is a type of generative model that creates data output that looks similar to the input data they were trained on. In order to train the AI, companies will input millions of images which are taken from the #internet. The more you use it, the better it gets. This puts the art community at risk, but this could be seen as beneficial for others.
On one hand, the use of AI art has its benefits, while it cannot replace people it can simplify some things. For smaller companies, authors and content creators, AI can provide images much quicker than a human. They also save costs since they do not need to pay anyone to use these services. Getting cover pages for novels, thumbnails and images for your content is much cheaper with the introduction of AI generators.

However, AI generators do not source their data sets #ethically. Millions of artists around the world have their works used to train these models without consent. Greg Rutkowski is a well-known Polish artist who is known for his fantastical paintings. His works are often used to train AI models in order to create work that imitates his style. The issue is, Rutkowski never consented to the use of his artwork to train AI. Most of the fantasy landscapes you are able to create on an AI generator, uses Rutkowski’s works. Sometimes, the AI generated image contains his signature, though the artist had no role in the image you generated.
Many artists are against the use of AI, not because it poses a risk to their job, but due to the fact that the art used to train these models are taken #unethically. Another issue is that art cannot be copyrighted since they are not created by a human author, they can be freely used and reused by anyone. Maybe in the future we will see disputes about who owns an ai generated image. Do you think AI has a more #positive or #negative impact?
